Volkswagen Group

Empowering Volkswagen Group UK — Rebranding and modernising their internal “Desktop” intranet platform to deliver critical updates, training and communication to 16,000+ employees across VW, Audi, Škoda, SEAT and commercial divisions.

Volkswagen Group (Desktop Intranet)

During my time as a Senior Engineer at Haymarket Media Group, I played a key role in the redevelopment and rebranding of Volkswagen Group UK’s internal intranet platform, “Desktop.” This platform acts as a central communications hub for more than 16,000 employees working across Volkswagen Group retailers and business units throughout the UK, including VW, VW Commercial, Audi, Škoda and SEAT.

The platform’s purpose was clear and non-negotiable: to provide reliable, real-time access to brand communications, internal news, training resources and operational updates across a large, distributed retail and corporate network. Given the scale and importance of the audience, clarity, speed, usability and reliability were essential.

As Senior Engineer on the project, I was deeply involved in both the technical delivery and the user interface layer of the platform. I worked closely with product owners, designers, developers and VW stakeholders to support the successful rebrand and rollout of the new Desktop experience.

My responsibilities included:

  • Leading front-end implementation for the rebranded platform, ensuring the user interface reflected the updated Volkswagen Group brand while improving usability, structure and visual clarity.

  • Implementing secure login and role-switching functionality, allowing users to authenticate and change their active role within the organisation where required — supporting the operational needs of staff working across different dealership or business contexts.

  • Building clean, functional UI flows that made it easier for staff to navigate brand updates, training materials and internal communications with minimal friction.

  • Translating design into robust, maintainable front-end code, ensuring consistency across screen sizes, devices and browser environments used across the retailer network.

  • Working closely with backend engineers to ensure data, content and user access flowed smoothly between systems and into the user interface.

  • Supporting the wider platform rebrand effort, helping modernise the overall look, structure and usability of a legacy enterprise system without disrupting day-to-day business operations.

Impact

The rebranded Desktop intranet delivered a more modern, accessible and reliable internal platform for Volkswagen Group UK’s entire retail network. It improved:

  • Day-to-day access to business-critical information

  • Clarity and consistency of brand communications

  • Usability of internal training and updates

  • Confidence in the platform as a dependable internal system

The project demanded careful coordination, technical precision and close collaboration with business stakeholders — ensuring that the rebrand enhanced the experience without introducing friction or downtime into a platform used daily across the UK.
